Mistaken Identity?
Despite the dramatic reduction in the volume of steam working in China by 1996, Changchun works was still very busy when I visited on 2 February 1996. Identifying locos in the works was often difficult but the right hand loco had 628 clearly painted on its water pump cover. If it was QJ 628 then it was a remarkable survivor, evading the cull of locos numbered below 1000 that occurred around 1990. A check of the date on the worksplate might have confirmed its identity but photography took priority over number taking, so we will probably never know whether it was really 628 or possibly 1628, 2628 or 6628. The left hand loco wasn't identified either.
