The morning picture of a train leaving Tunnel 4 was one of the most difficult to get in winter. The wind almost always blew up the valley and on most mornings all you would get for your efforts was a faceful of smoke. In summer the wind direction was more variable as can be seen in this shot of QJ 6986 and QJ 7143 on an eastbound freight taken on 5 September 2003.
