Don't let the sunshine fool you. April mornings in the north-east of China could be bitterly cold, producing spectacular exhausts but emphasising any steam leaks. JS 5075 hid itself and QJ 283 behind a cloud of leaking steam as they approached the summit north of Nancha with the early morning northbound coal train on 7 April 1988. QJ 1987, at the back, remained in the clear.
