By the late 1980s, JF class 2-8-2s were disappearing fast, displaced by more modern steam locos of classes JS and QJ and increasing numbers of diesels. By some miracle, a handful managed to survive until late 2004 on the Tongchuan Mine Railway in Shaanxi province. After a brief stop for a blow up and to clean the fire, JF 2182 got underway from Baimiaogou with a train of empties from Tongchuan to Wangshiwa colliery on 11 February 2004.
