Jiaojie Ironworks had a diesel by the time we got there in early 2006. One of the two SYs was at the back of the shed, said to be available as standby in case the diesel failed but stone cold.
The other SY was dumped outside, still pretty well intact and complete with cast numberplates and brass boiler bands. The numberplates identified this engine as SY.1588, which was a strange coincidence as the diesel was DFH5.1588. A closer inspection revealed that it was actually SY.1486 and 1588 was a locally applied lucky number. The same probably applied in the case of the diesel.
