The Berninabahn might not rival the Central of Peru or the Qinghai - Tibet Railway but for Europe, this is as high as adhesion worked railways get. Class ABe4/4 motor coaches 49 and 45 worked train RE1619, conveying a section of the Bernina Express, around the shore of Lago Bianco, 2250m above sea level, on 11 October 2007.
Up here there are no chocolate box villages or lush green meadows and nothing much grows apart from heather and bleached grass. It's a barren landscape but the RhB's red trains add a welcome splash of colour.
