Train RE1621 from Pontresina to Tirano conveyed the Davos portion of the Bernina Express and was photographed running alongside the lake at the summit of the Bernina Pass on 13 October 2007. ABe4/4ii motor coaches 46 and 43 provided the power.
The lake is generally known by its Italian name, Lago Bianco, meaning the white lake, and sits on the continental divide. From here the water either flows south to the River Po and drains into the Adriatic or flows east via the Rivers En/Inn and Donau to the Black Sea. Earlier in its journey the train had followed the Rivers Landwasser and Albula, tributaries of the Rhein, which drains into the North Sea.
