59.103 passed Crofton Pumping Station bound for Merehead Quarry with 7C77, the 12:41 stone empties from Acton T.C., on 30 March 2021.
The pumping station dates from the construction of the Kennet and Avon Canal in the early years of the 19th Century. There were insufficient natural sources of water to keep the upper reaches of the canal filled so Crofton's two beam engines were installed to pump water 40ft vertically, from where it could flow to the summit pound, about a mile to the west, under the force of gravity. These days electric pumps are used except for a few days a year when the beam engines are steamed.
