294.647 trundled through the Bayern countryside with six loaded china clay hoppers from Hirschau on the afternoon of 11 May 2016. The hoppers were bound for Amberg and a shunt onto the back of the afternoon freight to Nürnberg Rbf.
China clay or kaolin has been mined in the Hirschau area since the middle of the 19th Century and the deposits are amongst the largest in continental Europe. Annual production is somewhere in the region of half a million tonnes but much of it goes out by road.
