After barely an hour in Aberdeen, 43.305 and 43.238 were heading south again with 1E30, the 18:18 to Leeds, seen here approaching Muchalls on 17 May 2019.
Milepost 229¾ is visible to the left of the train, indicating the distance from Carlisle over the Caledonian route via Coatbridge and Coupar Angus. Despite often being considered as the northern end of the East Coast route, the line south from Aberdeen to Kinnaber Junction, north of Montrose, was owned and operated by the Caledonian Railway and then the LMS, although the NBR and then the LNER had running powers.
